Rachel Ward became a household name after playing Meggie Cleary in the beloved 1983 miniseries The Thorn Birds. More than 200 actresses were considered for the role, but Ward ultimately won it and delivered a performance that made her an international star.
Despite the show’s enormous success, Ward later admitted that negative reviews made her question her acting. She eventually came to view the experience differently, recognizing that her natural style simply didn’t fit the expectations of some critics at the time.
Her biggest personal success, however, came behind the scenes. While filming The Thorn Birds, Ward fell in love with her co-star Bryan Brown, who played Luke O’Neill. They married just months after filming ended and went on to raise three children together.
Ward later moved to Australia with Brown and continued working as an actress, director, and producer. She also became involved in advocacy and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her work supporting disadvantaged young people.
