A Smelly Belly Button Could Be a Warning Sign
Most people rarely think about their belly button, but an unusual smell can sometimes reveal more than poor hygiene.
Sweat, dead skin, body oils and bacteria can collect inside the belly button, especially in deep “innies.” Because the area can stay warm and moist, bacteria or yeast may also grow and cause a sour, musty or unpleasant odor.
Usually, gently washing the area with warm water and mild soap—and drying it thoroughly—is enough to solve the problem.
However, doctors say you shouldn’t ignore a persistent foul smell accompanied by redness, itching, swelling, pain, bleeding, pus or discharge. These symptoms could indicate an infection or, more rarely, another underlying problem.
If redness begins spreading, pain worsens, or you develop a fever or feel unwell, seek medical attention.
A little odor is often harmless, but if it doesn’t disappear after cleaning, your belly button may be trying to tell you something.
