To millions of fans, Elizabeth Montgomery will always be Samantha Stephens, the lovable witch from Bewitched who could change everything with a twitch of her nose.
But Montgomery was much more than a sitcom star.
Born in Los Angeles in 1933, she grew up in a show-business family and studied acting before building a career in television. Her early dramatic work earned praise, but everything changed in 1964 when she became Samantha Stephens.
Bewitched became a huge success, and Montgomery’s warmth, humor, and charm made Samantha one of television’s most memorable characters. Yet after the series ended in 1972, she refused to be typecast.
She took on darker and more challenging roles, including The Legend of Lizzie Borden in 1975, proving she was just as powerful in drama as she was in comedy.
