The Surprising Secrets of Petticoat Junction

For many viewers, Petticoat Junction was a beloved escape to a simpler time. The sitcom followed the Bradley family and Uncle Joe at the Shady Rest Hotel in Hooterville.

But the classic show had plenty of surprises. The title came from the Bradley sisters swimming in the railroad water tower, while the opening credits famously kept showing former actress Gunilla Hutton even after Meredith MacRae had taken over the role.

The Hooterville Cannonball also had its share of continuity mistakes, including changing locomotive numbers and different train versions used during filming.

Off-screen, Linda Kaye Henning and Mike Minor became a real-life married couple after playing a married couple on the show.

Sadly, Bea Benaderet, who played Kate Bradley, battled lung cancer during the series and died in 1968 at age 62.

After seven seasons and 222 episodes, Petticoat Junction ended in 1970, but its warmth, humor, and unforgettable characters have kept it alive in the memories of classic-TV fans.
