Josh Brolin is opening up about the struggles behind his Hollywood success in his new memoir, From Under the Truck.
The actor recalls a difficult childhood, including unusual and frightening experiences with his mother, wildlife conservationist Jane Cameron Agee. He also reflects on the pain of losing her in a car accident in 1995 when she was just 55 years old.
Brolin’s memoir details his long battle with addiction, which began at a young age. He experimented with drugs as a child and later struggled with alcohol for many years. A life-changing moment came in 2013 when he visited his dying grandmother while hungover, leading him to make the decision to quit drinking for good.
Now sober for more than a decade, Brolin says he enjoys life more than ever. He also credits his stepmother, Barbra Streisand, for her honest “tough love” when it came to his drinking. At 56, Brolin says he appreciates getting older and the peace that sobriety has brought him.
