Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii may not have been his most critically acclaimed movie, but its beautiful scenery, catchy music, and Elvis’s charm made it a fan favorite. Released in 1961, it became one of the year’s biggest hits, with its soundtrack featuring the timeless “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

The movie also created a formula that would shape many of Elvis’s future films: beautiful locations, romance, comedy, and plenty of songs.

Behind the scenes, things weren’t always easy. Publicity director Anne Fulchino recalled that Elvis seemed frustrated and uncomfortable with the type of movies he was making.

Still, Elvis found time for fun. He took golf lessons from legendary player Gary Player and even pulled a frightening prank by pretending to be dead, sending his entourage into a panic.

Fans can also spot several funny mistakes. In one car scene, Maile’s hands suddenly change position, while Chad’s arm shifts between shots. In another scene, Ellie mysteriously moves from one side of the car to the other.

Elvis also loved the red MGA roadster featured in the movie so much that he bought it. Today, it remains part of the collection at Graceland.
