‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Star Ben Jones Dies at 84
Ben Jones, best known for playing lovable mechanic Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at 84.
According to his wife, Alma Viator, Jones died Sunday after suffering a massive heart attack while resting at home. She remembered him as a man who lived a “full and happy life” and was deeply loved by many.
Born August 30, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, Jones studied radio, television and film at the University of North Carolina before beginning his acting career. He appeared in films including Smokey and the Bandit and The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings.
But his most memorable role came as Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard. Jones appeared in 141 episodes from 1979 to 1985, becoming a beloved figure among fans.
Jones later entered politics and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1989, serving two terms.
He remained closely connected to The Dukes of Hazzard throughout his later years.
Ben Jones leaves behind a lasting legacy in both entertainment and public service. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Ben Jones.
