Ricky Nelson’s Last-Minute Decision That Saved His Sons

Ricky Nelson was one of America’s most beloved teen idols, rising to fame through The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet before becoming a successful singer with hits like “Poor Little Fool” and “Travelin’ Man.”

Born in 1940, Ricky grew up in Hollywood and became a star while still a teenager. He later married Kristin Harmon, and they had four children, including twin sons Matthew and Gunnar.

Ricky reportedly hated flying, despite traveling frequently for his career. In December 1985, he was scheduled to fly with his twin sons to Dallas for a New Year’s performance.

But shortly before the trip, Ricky made a last-minute decision. He called his sons and told them they would not be flying with him.

That decision saved their lives.

Ricky boarded the plane alone. During the flight, a fire broke out, filling the cabin with smoke. Although the pilots managed to land the aircraft, Ricky and the other passengers died. He was only 45.

The exact cause of the fire remained disputed, with some believing a mechanical problem may have been responsible.

Matthew and Gunnar later became musicians themselves, carrying on their father’s legacy.
